Scrap – Kohath

I’ve been wanting to finish Kaido no Yume for a long time now.  The main problem with that plan is that I’ve already written the ending, and I’d like to find it before I start filling in the rest.  So this is just a scribble on what happens afterwards.

It was the day after that—that—

I still can’t call it a dream. It left me so… so sore, really. Inside and out. I’d been someone else for so long, and my muscles had to get used to being Kohath again.

It’d only been one night.

I wasn’t sure what to do next. I mean, obviously, back to life, such as it was. But had I learned anything? Was I supposed to have?

I stayed in bed, confused. What do you do when your life has ended but you’re still living?

I missed Iisera.

No, actually—I was grieving for it.

Couldn’t have been just a dream, then—I’m not that messed up, am I?

It’s too darn cold in here.

I wanted to stay in bed, but I couldn’t; hunger, the call of nature, and a vague feeling I was supposed to do something with my day soon forced me out of bed.

The lunar winds were still howling. I resisted the urge to chime in.

I’m a wolf, right.

Sometimes… Sometimes the wolves are silent and the moon is howling. I’d read that somewhere.

I felt like I hadn’t read anything in years.

Anyway, up. Call of nature, attended to. For hunger, a quick sandwich. And I continued to wonder what I was supposed to do with my day.

WIP – Magni

All right, so this is one of my characters that’s seen far too little implementation. By which I mean to say I was kind of attached to him in high school fifteen years ago (fifteen years ago! *waves old man cane*), but I don’t think I’ve yet put down anything about him.  So he came up next in my series of profiles (previous: Maxim, Huck) and this is what I’ve got so far:

2009-09-08-magni

He’s a rami by the name of Magni—he also goes by Mack.  His last name has fluctuated over time; I’m pretty sure its current value isn’t congruent with (the latest version of) good Rami phonology, so I won’t bother to list it here until it’s finalized.

Drawing this guy was complicated by the fact that after all this time it was somewhat difficult to envision what he actually looked like.  It does not help that my only picture of him was drawn in the dark ages, before I learned how to draw—I was trying to construct the above from the below:

mid-1990s-magni

Yeah. Considering that, I’d almost say I did pretty well.   He might look better with accessories like that but it doesn’t match the profile template I’m working by.

1st draft [partim] – Mori

Here’s another of those fragments I promised you’d see coming.  Mori’s story is one I still don’t have a title for or much detail in; though I have the broad outline for it, at the moment it’s mostly just something that gets put on paper as I go along.  For example, when I was working on this page it somehow became one of my goals to use the word ‘inhastate’.

Now, ordinarily a golem wouldn’t hurt a fly. They can’t really; it’s not just in their programming, it’s in principle—the magic that animates a golem just doesn’t work if you try to build hostility into it.

Seeing my golem wrestling with the gryphon-man for a weapon was, to put it mildly, more disturbing than the monster in the arena.

When it succeeded at winning the spear from the kelvin, I figured it might be a good time to bail out and jumped off its back. Munk leaped back into the arena, landing with a heavy thud, and started swinging the spear around wildly.

It didn’t look like it had any idea what it was doing.

I looked up at the now-inhastate kelvin, but he was just watching as if nothing had happened, holding its candle in front of it with both talons.

WIP – Taaq

And here’s the result of the scheduled work on the icebear I did this week.  Unless someone points out something horrible, this’ll probably be the last pencil version, and I’ll start coloring from here.

Taaq WIP as of 2009-08-25

WIP – Kohath

For some reason my last picture of Kohath was drawn well over five years ago, and I figured I’d better draw a new one since the old one was kind of awful, too.

I started on this a bit ago and worked on it for a while this weekend at the Aurora furmeet.

Kohath

I have a sort of idea that there should be another person in the shot (I can see him watching Scott go up the stairs) but I’m not sure it’d be worth the effort.  What do y’all think?

WIP – Taaq

I did some unscheduled work on this at the Aurora furmeet on Saturday night, just ’cause it’d been a while.   Worked on the shading a bit, and am trying to get the iceberg to resolve some—I know already that it’s too pointy along the top; that’ll be the next thing in need of work.

Taaq as of 2009-08-24I really like this guy, hehe.  Hopin’ it turns out well.

On a more general note, I’ve decided once a week is a little too infrequently to post here, so instead I’m going to try and post a couple of things every few days.

2nd draft [partim] – …and Thou.

The first draft was posted in full on my LiveJournal.

On a cool April day—the sun shining with a softness of color that pastelified the world—Kohath was shopping. Just by looking at him you could tell he was touched by love; he was humming “45’s Earthlight,” and his usual trudge was replaced by the unselfconsciousness that only comes from focusing on someone else.

He moved alone, though, down the street of shops, stopping every now and then to look at things in the windows that caught his eye: colorful glass sculptures, a chocolate fountain, a dance lesson—until he caught the warm scent of bread baking and knew what he wanted. He followed his nose to the bakery and approached the counter.

“Good morning, wolf,” said the baker, a short boar in a flour-covered apron. “What can I get for you today?”

“Bread!” he said, grinning. The baker only rolled his eyes at the joke. “Uh, one of those sweet loaves. And half a dozen of… nah, just that.”

WIP – Taaq the Icebear.

All right, guys, this week I was slackin’ off a bunch on the getting things done front, in arts and elsewhere. It may take me a while to get the hang of doing this, so be patient with me. Decided it’d make the most sense to post each piece I’ve been working on in separate posts, even if it means a little mini-flood every week.

So, the first thing I’m posting today is one some of you have already seen, which is the picture of IcebearMuke. He’s the bear I’ve been playing on Sundays. Well, I say IcebearMuke. The characters I play online tend to acquire counterparts in my worlds, and this guy is really more in that element than mine. He’s kind of slotted into Nother, around Kohath’s timeframe. Not sure what planet he lives on. His name is Taaq Ulluriittuq (á‘–á–… ᐅᓪᓗᕇᑦᑐᖅ) which is supposed to be Inuktitut for ‘the dark is starless’. Not many polar bears left in those days.

He fishes.  And of course he’s chubby. ;)

Maxim

Maxim

Yeah, so I figured I’d try going through and drawing as many of my characters as I could.  (It’s a whim that seems to strike me from time to time; maybe I’ll make some progress on it this time.)

This is Maxim, one of my oldest characters.  A bit of a mary-sue, but hopefully we can work on that a bit.  Never mind that his equipment is straight out of Zelda.

I’m going to have to work on coloring this.  It’s been so long it took me nearly four or five attempts to get it to look anything like him… The hands are really poorly-done, but I’m really happy with how the feet came out.
